Intestinal/Cellular Detoxificiation

On this page: Information for Understanding how toxins build up in your body, how chemical exposure can lead to allergies, sensitivities, and various health conditions, and why you should detoxify your body on a regular basis, and a Nutritional Supplement designed to support Intestinal/Cellular Detoxification.

What is Intestinal/Cellular Detoxification?

Cellular detoxification involves identifying and removing or eliminating natural and human-made toxins that you have absorbed, ingested, or inhaled during your lifetime. The most common substances causing cellular toxicity include many prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, recreational drugs, alcohol, tobacco, heavy metals, many human-made chemicals, food additives, chlorine and chlorine based products, herbicides, pesticides, petroleum products, solvents and commercial cleaning products, formaldehyde, combustion by-products, household chemicals, fluorocarbons, glues and adhesives, fluoride & chlorine and other chemicals in tap water, and chemicals found in common office supplies and common personal care products.

What are multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS)?

This ‘new’ disease occurs when people become sensitized to a specific chemical or class of chemicals by either acute (large exposure, short duration) or chronic low-level chemical exposure. Due to the immune system becoming sensitized to this particular chemical or class of chemicals, people can no longer tolerate minute exposure levels without reacting. Symptoms of MCS are often diffuse and nonspecific and can range in severity from sneezing and mild headaches to seizures, violent headaches, and other overwhelming reactions.

When our body’s antioxidant an detoxification systems and pathways are un-congested and working properly, we have a relative degree of protection from low-level environmental chemical exposure, however, modern science is creating new chemicals at a rate that far exceed the ability of our detoxification systems to adapt and evolve. There are many books that cover the subject of learning about toxins in your environment, how to avoid them, and alternative products to use. If you have a history of chemical exposure or chemical injury, we recommend that you see a physician or alternative health care professional who is skilled in environmental medicine. They should be familiar with the signs, symptoms, and treatment of environmental illness and cellular toxicity, and offer several options of types of testing (blood, urine, hair, live-cell analysis are commonly used) that will help in verifying the diagnosis and determining the proper protocol for eliminating the toxins from your body.

What is Intestinal Detoxification?

Eating foods such as meat, or anything dead or in a state of decay, or by consuming devitalized foods or substances (cooked, frozen, canned, or processed foods, alcohol, coffee, candy, sugar, dairy, wheat, corn, drugs [prescription or recreational], tobacco, etc.) stimulates the body to automatically secrete mucous throughout the intestinal tract. This mucous lining acts as a protective barrier to prevent the absorption of toxic substances. This mechanism was probably intended to handle the occasional ingestion of rotten food or other toxins. Normally, after the toxic ‘event’ had passed, the body would strip away the mucous lining it created for protection within a couple days.

The problem is that the standard American diet (SAD) is mainly composed of foods which cause protective mucous production by the body. Because the body has no time to strip away the mucous layers, they continue weakening the intestinal tract and eventually the entire body. As peristalsis diminishes, the time it takes food to pass through the body becomes longer. The longer it takes for food to move through, the more it becomes smelly, dry, and sticky, actually beginning to rot while it is still in your body. It now has a tendency to stick to the intestinal walls, rather than moving through quickly as intended.

These toxins have been related to the formation of many colon problems, including diverticulitis, colitis, and even colon cancer. If these substances are not removed from the intestinal lining the body will continue to fight a losing battle, causing an overuse and eventual degeneration of the immune system, and overuse and congestion of the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and skin. This all leads to congestion and gradual degeneration of all of the body’s cells, tissues, glands, organs, systems and results in various states of sickness and disease. A bloated abdomen is often caused by congested lymphatics surrounding the intestines due to colon toxicity.

We recommend to our patients that while they are undergoing a colon cleanse that they increase their intake of pure water and eat mainly organic vegetables, fruits, and grains. Another important adjunctive therapy to colon cleansing is to take protease enzymes on an empty stomach(as long as there is no history of gastric ulcers, hiatal hernia, or gastritis), which will then go into the blood and into the lymphatic system and act as scavengers, ‘eating’ undigested proteins, by-products of inflammation, cellular debris, chemicals, toxins, free-radicals, antigen-antibody complexes, and a variety of different waste products that are found in the blood and lymphatic system. By doing this, people will have less symptoms and discomfort while doing colon cleanses. When doing colon cleanses it is extremely important to move at the pace that the person’s body can tolerate. Common symptoms people experience during a colon cleanse include fatigue, headaches, general body aches, and foul smelling urine and feces. It is during these times that people should remember that these symptoms are common and normal. Some people need to set aside time in their busy schedule to devote to a colon cleanse.

During the cleanse, toxins, chemicals, and heavy metals are broken off or come off the colon wall. Some of these toxins are absorbed into the blood stream for a short period of time, and occasionally people will feel worse rather than better as the body is processing these toxins out of the body. If the colon cleanse is performed too quickly, or faster than the person’s body can handle, these symptoms can become extreme. This can lead to what is called a ‘healing crisis’, where a person may experience abdominal cramping, diarrhea, low-grade fever, or other symptoms of detoxification which can cause certain individuals to end up in bed or stop the cleansing process because it is too uncomfortable. This is not necessary to achieve optimal results.

There are many methods to clean the colon. A customized program should be developed for each person to suit their individual lifestyle and needs. We recommend (especially to sensitive people) that they start with a smaller dose of colon cleansing product and gradually work up to the recommended dose. Most manufacturers of colon cleanse products or systems will account for this need of individuality in using their products, with instructions on how to move ahead or back off in order to get the desired results. Other ways to modify a colon cleanse is to consume more water, consume more protease enzymes on an empty stomach, and by avoiding foods and substances which introduce additional chemicals and toxins into the body.

Deficiencies of acidophilus, the mineral magnesium, or the lack fiber in the diet can contribute to constipation.

Bentonite clay, which has been shown to bond with heavy metals, is an important adjunctive dietary supplement.

We recommend psyllium fiber products to most people to increase the fiber content of their stools. For people with sensitive intestinal tracts, we recommend vegetable or apple/pear pectin fiber.

A good nutrient used to loosen the stools and healed irritated intestinal linings is aloe vera.

Stronger herbal products such as cascara sagrada or senna work well as laxatives, however, these should not be used continuously for long periods of time because the body can become dependent on them.
